Aloha friends! Here’s a fun fact about me to kick this post off. I’m a Dutchie! Ok, I was born in Australia. Yes, my mother was too. But her parents – my Oma and Opa – made their way over from The Netherlands during WW2, via Indonesia. And I am seriously clinging-on to my heritage.
I spent 3 years trying my darndest to learn Dutch, and then relocated to Amsterdam with my partner in 2012, staying as long as our working visa’s allowed us. Sigh. It was amazing, and boy did I feel at home. If the visa gods decided we could return – we would. In an instant. It is one gorgeous, inspired, liberal place to call home.
So just a disclosure: I am naturally drawn to Dutch artists and the awesome things they create. And while I’m at it, let me tell you I also have a thing for flowers. A big thing. Not the real ones (though they’re alright too) but beautiful, botanical drawings, found in vintage books tucked away in the corner of op-shop bookshelves. My heart.
If you too love the Dutch – and flowers – an odd combination I admit but one I’d encourage you to explore – you will LOVE Anne Ten Donkelaar.
I am seriously in awe.
